The Origin of the High-Five

The Origin of the High-Five

There are several origin stories behind the high-five, but the most widely documented one dates back to 1977 during a Major League Baseball game. On October 2nd, Dodgers outfielder Dusty Baker had just smashed his 30th home run of the season. As he rounded the bases and returned to home plate, his teammate Glenn Burke was waiting with his hand raised in celebration. Baker slapped it, and in that spontaneous moment, the high-five was born—or at least, that’s the version that stuck. Since then, it’s become a universal symbol of excitement and victory.
